Eastern Oregon faces significant and persistent need. In Umatilla County and northern Morrow County—home to approximately 37,441 residents—about 12.5% of people (roughly 1 in 8) experience food insecurity. Child food insecurity is even higher, at an estimated 18.4%, well above statewide averages and reflective of ongoing barriers to reliable access to nutritious food. At the same time, recent community data suggest that roughly 3,800 residents (about 4%) experience housing instability, while annual counts identify 300–500 individuals living in literal homelessness. Local service providers consistently report demand that exceeds available shelter and support resources.
These intersecting challenges—intensified by rural isolation, limited public transportation, and a shortage of affordable housing—leave many Eastern Oregon families struggling to meet basic needs. Eastern Oregon Mission’s services are essential, helping individuals and families access food, housing support, and life-stabilizing resources that would otherwise remain out of reach.
